But numbers cannot deceive people.
In the past 20 years, Chinese people's demand for sex toys has been expanding step by step. According to the "2022-2023 Survey and Analysis Report on China's Sex Toys Industry and Consumer Behavior" released by iMedia Consulting, the size of the sex toy market has shown a stable upward trend in the past 10 years, and it is expected that the market size will reach 208.13 billion yuan by 2025.
结婚前，丽莎从未了解过两性文化，“连拉手都脸通红”。直到2005年，她在上海第一次国际成人展会上认识了性学家李银河老师，交流了很多，丽莎才觉得“这真的不算什么”，都是正常的生理需求。
某种意义上，丽莎的认知路径，也是社会的成长历程。一切始于需求，进而挖掘经济，并推动制度的变革。
生产或销售跟性有关的物品，在1980年代的中国属于犯罪行为。直到1990年代，各地出现了专门生产和代工的工厂，并陆续拿到医疗器械批准文号，成人用品才正式被列入医疗辅助健康用品。
2003年，国家食品药品监督局又发布《国家食品药品监督管理局关于仿真式性辅助器具不作为医疗器具管理的通知》。从此，国家放松了对中国的成人用品监管，成人用品不再被视为特殊商品需要前置审批。
这是从“成人用品”到“情趣用品”的转折点。
同年，恰逢中国电商平台萌芽，淘宝和京东都在这一年上线，而网络购物隐秘、便利的特质，正是最适宜成人用品发展的温床。也在这年，国内最大的成人用品连锁品牌“桔色成人”，创立了网络平台“桔色网”。
但此时，真正的互联网时代还没有崛起，人们仍被困在传统观念里，谈“性”色变。
在一批“80后”“ 90后”的印象里，情趣用品店总是建在阴暗潮湿的小巷里，常有人偷偷摸摸进去，再急急忙忙离开，有时包装盒还会被扔在门外，就像是想吃糖又怕大人看见的孩子。但不同的是，孩子偷吃糖，会被骂“馋嘴”；大人偷“吃糖”，却可能被冠以“下流”的污名。
一切都需要过程。无论孩童还是成人，过去所处的环境都缺少基础的性教育，但越是被压抑的东西就越会在地下生长蔓延，小说、影片仍然会以非法渠道广为传播，这也成为国人了解性知识的直接来源。
但数字骗不了人。
过去20年，中国人对情趣用品的需求在一步步扩大。艾媒咨询发布的《2022-2023年中国情趣用品行业及消费行为调查分析报告》数据显示，近10年来，情趣用品市场规模呈稳定攀升态势，预计2025年市场规模有望达到2081.3亿元。
